Our Impact

Making A Difference in Our County

University of Georgia Cooperative Extension is working hard for its constituents. The following are examples of Extension’s impact in the county over the past year.

Agriculture and Natural Resources

Lee County holds meetings on weed control and production of cotton, peanuts, corn, and pecans, and Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent Doug Collins provides technical assistance to local farmers. In 2024, one Lee County farmer set a world-record soybean yield, while another won the national conventional-till corn yield contest. Collins also writes a weekly news column in The Lee County Ledger and teaches a soil fertility class at the Sunbelt Expo. As well as making on-site consultations with farmers, Collins also makes site visits for homeowner, government entities, and commercial businesses and makes recommendations regarding issues they have involving agricultural and natural resources topics.

4-H Youth Development

Lee County 4-H members, led by 4-H Agent Leila Baxter, were involved in a wide variety of activities in 2024.?Baxter conducts monthly 4-H club meetings with 18 fifth-grade classes. In fall 2024, Baxter spent two months working after school with 14 fifth and sixth graders to prepare them for Cloverleaf Project Achievement. Over half of the participants place 3rd or higher in their project areas. Lee County 4-H also offers a competitive horse club and SAFE Archery and Shotgun teams.

The SOWEGA 4-H Horse Club, led by 4 certified volunteers, competes in State Horse Quiz Bowl, State Horse Judging, and Hippology contests with occasional field trips to local stables. in 2024, the Junior (4th-8th) Horse Judging Team placed 5th with one student placing 10th individually.? The S.A.F.E. Shotgun Team and Archery Team have 6 certified coaches and 40 team members. In 2024, the Archery Team competed at the State 4-H Indoor Archery Contest in January and the State 4-H Outdoor Archery Contest in April. The Shotgun Team practiced from February to May to qualify for the State Modified Trap Contest at Rock Eagle on Mother's Day weekend.? Lee County 4-H also offers a variety of 4-H Summer Camps for grades 4th-12th. In 2024, Lee County 4-H had 478 indivudals involved in various afterschool programs, camps, summer activites, and competitions.
